Ayrshire and Arran hosts many visitor attractions designed to bring events and activities from the past for the present generation's entertainment, information and education.
Brodick Castle, Vikingar, Culzean Castle, the Burns Museum and the Scottish Maritime Museum are just some of the venues created to tell the story of the area and its people through the ages.
Ayrshire is the birthplace of Open Golf, with Open Championship courses at Troon and Turnberry, and the site of the very first British Open at Prestwick. 2004 saw the return of the British Open to Royal Troon, and Turnberry will stage the 2009 event.
It's also the birthplace of Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns, celebrated in May 2004 by “Burns an' a' that”, Scotland’s newest and most exciting festival celebrating life and contemporary Scottish culture. Ayrshire is also steeped in the history of Scottish kings and heroes, like Robert the Bruce and - so legend has it
of William Wallace. Playing a key role in Scottish history, it has castles and monuments dating back centuries, and visitor attractions to keep all the family entertained.
And Ayr races - Ayr is Scotland's premier racecourse, hosting both Flat and National Hunt fixtures. Holding at least 25 days racing every year, Ayr is host to the Scottish Grand National, the Ayr Gold Cup and a host of other valuable races during its 12 month racing programme.
On Arran you can travel back beyond the mists of time and visit prehistoric standing stones on Machrie Moor, while Brodick Castle, the Isle of Arran Heritage Museum, Balmichael Visitor Centre and Arran Aromatics are well worth a visit. The Isle of Cumbrae boasts great sailing waters, the smallest cathedral in Britain and the opportunity to cycle around the island in a day. |
